Christopher Cronin © 2012 Mid-1990s through 2012: called “MARC for Acquisitions” Gets resources with “good enough” cataloging to the shelf ASAP Frees up copy cataloger time for clearing backlogs, and attending to hidden and special collections Criteria for what can be finished in Acquisitions has been continually broadened: 2007/08: 38,923 records were finalized in Acquisitions 2010/11: 60,002 records were finalized in Acquisitions Why “Rapid Cataloging”?

Christopher Cronin © 2012 Easier to say what it isn’t. The criteria excludes: Foreign language records 9 specific call number ranges (music, atlases, kids lit, etc.) Elvl 8 and Elvl M Absence of or incomplete 050 or 090 Absence of at least one LCSH Does not treat RDA any differently than AACR2 OCLC validation will provide some degree of assurance that core RDA elements are populated Criteria currently functions like a checklist This summer, refocusing training on assessing the quality of the metadata, not just the presence or absence of MARC fields. What is “Rapid Cataloging”?
