1 End-of-the Year ELL Parent Meeting Friday, June 5, 2015

2 Current Numbers in the District 123 ELL students (as of 6/2) IP - 70 WM – 13 (K-3) LR – 7 (K-3) IMS - 22 MIHS – 10 23 languages spoken by ELLs (top 4 – Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Japanese) 61 former ELLs being monitored 88 new students given the placement test since August (73 qualified)

3 Language Proficiency Levels Level 1: Beginning/ Advanced Beginning Level 2: Intermediate Level 3: Advanced Level 4: Transitional – exit level

4 WELPA Results Exit the ELL Program No longer receive ELD support in 2015-16 Be monitored for 2 yrs. Overall Level of 4 Will continue receiving ELD support in 2015-16 Will take ELPA21 annual test in 2016 Overall Level of 1, 2, or 3

9 ELL Program in All Elementary Schools This Fall Will be hiring a new ELL teacher to work with students at West Mercer and Lakeridge Continuing ELL students will remain at the school they are attending now (transfer request depends on enrollment numbers and won’t be decided until late Aug) Newly tested students will be placed at their new boundary school (to avoid another move the following year)

10 2016-2017 Changes Opening of the new school All students (continuing and new) will attend their neighborhood school (according to new boundaries) Shorter bus rides

13 ELPA21 Assessment - based on new ELP Standards - will replace WELPA Annual Test (WELPA Placement Test for one more year) - computer-based and interactive

16 Online ELA* and Math Assessments Two parts: - Computer Adaptive Assessment (CAT) - Performance Task (PT) * Students who have attended U.S. schools for less that 12 months are exempted from ELA tests
