1 Student Objectives Students will determine the meaning of unknown words using context clues. Students will utilize GO/Short ACT -like English passages to enhance grammar skills. Students will demonstrate mastery of reading comprehension, word meaning, and literary terms presented in Beowulf by taking a comprehensive assessment. Students will review and understand GAINS test results. Students will learn and utilize the QAR (Question Answer Relationship) strategy to monitor reading comprehension when taking standardized tests. Students will utilize summarization to better understand how to extrapolate main ideas when reading nonfiction texts. Students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences using the Standard English conventions of grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

3 GAINS TEST RESULT REVIEW Read Passage II located on page four and answer questions 13- 21. After completing the section, list the questions that you found most challenging to answer. Explain why these questions were difficult to answer.

4 Where are the answers to questions found ? QAR, Question –Answer Relationship Right There Questions: The answer is in the text. The words used in the question and the words used for the answer can usually be found in the same sentences. Skill focus: Recall

5 Question-Answer Relationship Think and Search: The answer is in the text, but the words used in the question are not in the same sentence. Different parts of the answer can be found in different parts of the text and put together so that inferences can be made or conclusions can be drawn. Skill focus: Analysis

6 Question- Answer Relationship On My Own: The answer is in your head. The text can be use as a reference; however you must use a combination of your personal experience and prior knowledge to answer the question. Skill focus: Evaluative

The answers are generalizations and applied examples that come from combining information from the text and your prior knowledge. Skill focus: Inference
