3 Rome is located in the Lazio region of Italy. Central western portion of Italy on the Tiber and the Aniene River to the north. Rome is 496 sq miles!!! Rome, Italy

4 Rome has a Mediterranean climate. Spring and Autumn are mild to warm. January average high temperature:55.2F Summer: May-October

5 Rome is located on the Tiber River and the Aniene River. The Tyrrhenian Sea is located west of Rome. Tyrrhenian Sea

6 The arch was created as a victory arch to celebrate Emperor Titus conquest of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Local Jews didn’t pass under the arch as a sign of mourning and exile of the holy land.

7 The Roman Forum was an ancient marketplace. It also had the main square and House of Senate.

8 The Catacombs were a Christian burial place. The Christians didn’t want to be buried in the same cemetery with Pagans which was the religion of many Romans

9 It was originally built to honor the gods. It then became a tomb for the most famous Renaissance painters. Now it is a functional church and a place of worship.

10 It was created in 1732 by Nicola Salvi at request of Pope Clemente XII. It features Neptune and other statues representing health and abundance.

11 The Coliseum was used for entertainment. Gladiators (criminals, prisoners of war, and slaves) fought each other or animals to the death.

12 It got its name after the Spanish Ambassador who lived at the church at the top of the steps. During the Renaissance it was the most popular tourist attraction in the city.

13 St Peters Basilica got its name from Emperor Constantine building a Basilica over St. Peters tomb. St. Peters square

14 Rome has three airports. The Fiumicino Airport (the largest), Rome Ciampino Airport ( civilian/military), and Roma-Urbe Airport ( mostly helicopters and private flights.)

15 There is one port in Rome. The Port of Civitavecchia is where cruise ships dock.

16 Rome’s biggest train station, Termini is one of the largest in Europe. The second-largest is the Rome-Tiburtina.

17 Rome has about 21 taxis for every 10,000 citizens. The amount of taxi is far below other European countries amount.

18 Subways There is a two-line subway system operating in Rome. They intersect at Rome-Termini station.

19 Busses There is over 350 busses and 8 thousand stops. There is only one trolleybus in Rome and more are planned to arrive.
