6. What is An SAE? SAE Stands For Supervised Agricultural Experience –Conducted outside of class time –SAE is your major project for this class. It counts for 25% of your final grade

8. Types of SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) Entrepreneurship –planning, implementing, operating and assuming financial risks in an agricultural business or farming activity. –Examples: raising hogs, chickens, or plants to sell, or operating a farm supply store.

9. Types of SAE Experimental –planning and conducting an agricultural experiment using the scientific process or scientific method such as comparing different fertilize rates on plants.

10. Types of SAE Analytical –identify an agricultural problem that cannot be solved by experiments and design a plan to investigate and analyze the problem such as a marketing display.

11. Types of SAE Placement –Teachers aid in placing students into jobs outside the regular classroom hours and may be paid or unpaid work such as working at a farm supply store, at a greenhouse or for a landscape company.

12. Types of SAE Exploratory –helps students learn about agriculture and become aware of possible agricultural careers through short times spent observing, shadowing or helping such as attending a career day, interviewing a veterinarian or assisting a horse owner.

Types of SAE Improvement –a series of activities that improves the value or appearance of the place of employment, school, home or community; the efficiency of a business or an enterprise; or living conditions of the family. –Examples include computerizing records, building a fence, growing a herb or vegetable garden, installing a landscape, remodeling or repairing equipment.

Types of SAE Supplementary –performing one specific agricultural skill outside of normal class time. –This skill is not related to the major SAE but is normally taught in an agricultural program, it involves experimental learning and contribute to the development of agriculture skills and knowledge on the part of the student. –The activity is accomplished in less than a day and does not require a series of steps such as pruning a tree, staking tomatoes or changing oil.

You could win a proficiency award!!! –This is an award earned by submitting pictures AND records from an SAE project in one of 51 categories –Recipients of these awards win money/scholarship –For example: For your SAE, you work at a plant nursery. You could enter your SAE Diversified Horticulture or Nursery Operations.

17. Why should I have an SAE? To earn your degrees!! –Greenhand Degrees Enrollment in an ag. Class Ability to explain the FFA motto, salute, Creed, emblem, colors and Code of Ethics and official dress FFA member Plans for an SAE Program This degree is because of its hardness and endurance

18. Chapter Degree This degree is because just as there are more precious metals than silver, there are higher honors to be gained in the FFA Earned Greenhand Degree Two semesters of ag. Classes SAE program $150 or 45 hours 15 min. group discussion Demonstrate five procedures of parliamentary law Satisfactory scholastic record

State Degree This degree is to symbolize the growth from the bronze to the silver to the gold; rare and golden qualities Chapter FFA Degree Two years of ag. course work and 24 months of active FFA membership SAE program $1000 or 300 hours. Demonstrate leadership ability Five activities above the chapter level Satisfactory scholastic record

21. Why should I have an SAE???? It is 30% of your FINAL grade! The purpose of the SAE component of the horticulture course is to gain work experience although some types allow students to earn money too! Make this a fun experience, work alone or with someone else. You can also make this a family project.
