Welcome to Year One
2
Our priority when the children come back to school in September is to help them to settle in and to help them to feel confident and happy.
3
In the morning the gates will open at 8.40 a.m and close at 8:45 a.m. We would encourage you to say goodbye in the playground. However, for the first couple of weeks you can walk them to the door. Teaching time will start at 8:45 a.m so teachers will not be available. If you wish to talk to the teachers you can do so at the end of the school day. Hometime is at 3.15p.m. We will send children out to you.
4
We encourage children to be independent. They will be changing their own books, and they need to be able to change for P.E so please help them at home.
5
We have a variety of activities which build on the experiences they have had in Reception.
6
We then move onto more structured learning which is creative and exciting.
7
Aspirations
9
We concentrate on teaching the sounds first as these help more with reading and spelling. We continue to teach tricky sounds, key words and develop their comprehension and vocabulary. As in reception we have phonics daily in ability groups. Children are used to moving to other classrooms.
11
We also have opportunities to practise what we have learned in phonics. We have group reading and a reading corner in every classroom. The book bags will come home every day and we support children to choose the next book when they have read at home. We encourage children to write their book titles in their reading record book. It is very important that you continue to listen to your child read and develop their understanding by asking them questions about what they have read.
12
We go on lots of visits to explore the local area!
13
We also go on exciting trips!
14
We like going to the wildlife area to do Forest School.
