THE VERB AVOIR MEANING AND CONJUGATION

KEY TERMS Infinitive –An infinitive is a verb form, usually beginning with the word “to” –The non conjugated form of the verb Conjugation –a. form of a verb for person, number, tense, voice, mood, etc – b. the complete set of the forms of a given verb

AVOIR AVOIR = TO HAVE –J’ai = I have –Tu as = you have –Il a = he has –Elle a = she has –On a = people have –Nous avons = we have –Vous avez = you have –Ils ont = they have –Elles ont = they have The verb avoir is an irregular verb

AVOIR NOTE: je becomes j’ because of vowel –J’ai deux bureaux = I have two desks –No other subject pronoun does this NOTE 2: All of these are the present tense conjugation of the verb avoir.

AVOIR Nouns subjects –Same form of the verb as if replacing the noun with a pronoun EXAMPLES: –Pierre and Jean have two chairs. Pierre et Jean ont deux chaises –Marie has a pen Marie a un stylo

NEGATIVE SENTENCES Putting Ne…pas around the verb makes sentences negative –Ne…pas = not –Ne -> n’ before a vowel REMEMBER Un /une /des -> de in negative EXAMPLES –Je m’appelle Marc Je ne m’appelle pas Marc. –Elle a un poster. Elle n’a pas de poster.

EXAMPLES He doesn’t have. –Il n’a pas. We do not have 16 years. –Nous n’avons pas seize ans. Her name isn’t Michelle. –Elle ne s’appelle pas Michelle.
