2 KEY TERMS Infinitive –An infinitive is a verb form, usually beginning with the word “to” –The non conjugated form of the verb Conjugation –a. form of a verb for person, number, tense, voice, mood, etc – b. the complete set of the forms of a given verb

3 AVOIR AVOIR = TO HAVE –J’ai = I have –Tu as = you have –Il a = he has –Elle a = she has –On a = people have –Nous avons = we have –Vous avez = you have –Ils ont = they have –Elles ont = they have The verb avoir is an irregular verb

4 AVOIR NOTE: je becomes j’ because of vowel –J’ai deux bureaux = I have two desks –No other subject pronoun does this NOTE 2: All of these are the present tense conjugation of the verb avoir.

5 AVOIR Nouns subjects –Same form of the verb as if replacing the noun with a pronoun EXAMPLES: –Pierre and Jean have two chairs. Pierre et Jean ont deux chaises –Marie has a pen Marie a un stylo

6 NEGATIVE SENTENCES Putting Ne…pas around the verb makes sentences negative –Ne…pas = not –Ne -> n’ before a vowel REMEMBER Un /une /des -> de in negative EXAMPLES –Je m’appelle Marc Je ne m’appelle pas Marc. –Elle a un poster. Elle n’a pas de poster.

7 EXAMPLES He doesn’t have. –Il n’a pas. We do not have 16 years. –Nous n’avons pas seize ans. Her name isn’t Michelle. –Elle ne s’appelle pas Michelle.
