Mechanical Functions
2
Class Starter Give an example of a technical system and name some of it’s components (different parts that make it up). _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ What is a mechanical function? _____________________________________________ _____________________________________________ What would be the mechanical function of these different components?____________________________________ _____________________________________________

Review - Mouvements Translation Rotation Helical
moves in straight line Rotation moves in a circular pattern Helical A combination of translation & rotation
4
Review – external Forces
Compression Force that crushes a material Tension Force that stretches a material Torsion Force that twists a material Bending Force that bends a material Shearing Force that cuts or tears a material
5
Mechanical Functions Technical systems are made up of different components. Each component in a system plays an important role in the overall functioning of the system. The role played by a component in a technical system is called a mechanical function.
6
Vocabulary words Basic Mechanical Function: the role played by a component or a group of components in the function or assembly of a technical object. Components: the parts or fluids in a technological object that have a mechanical function.
7
Guiding: the basic mechanical function of any component that controls the motion of one or several moving parts. Guide: a component that has the basic mechanical function of guiding. Link: connect two or more parts of a technical object. Linking: the basic mechanical function provided by any component that links an object’s parts. Linking component: one that has the basic mechanical function of linking.
8
Basic Mechanical Functions
The 2 types of basic mechanical functions we will be looking at are: Links Guiding control
9
1) Links A link connects, fastens, or puts together two or more components of a technical object. Ex: nail, screw, nut, bolt, glue
10
Characteristics of Links
A link always has 4 characteristics. Direct or indirect Rigid or flexible Removable or non-removable Complete or Partial
11
1 DIRECT INDIRECT Two parts can hold together without a linking component. Two parts must hold together WITH a linking component.
12
2 RIGID FLEXIBLE The surfaces of linked parts or linking components can be deformed. The surfaces of linked parts or linking components are rigid.
13
NON- REMOVABLE REMOVABLE 3
Linked parts can be separated with no resulting damage. Separating the linked parts will cause damage.
14
4 COMPLETE PARTIAL At least one part is capable of motion with respect to the other. No movement between linked parts.

2) Guiding Control Guidance is the function of a part that directs another part along a specific path. Guidance dictates whether the motion is either rotational or translational. ROTATIONAL Ensures the rotational motion of a moving part Usually a cylindrical part TRANSLATIONAL Ensures the straight motion of a moving part Usually a groove or a slide
