A number is written in scientific notation when it is expressed in the form below where a is greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10, and n is an integer. A number is written in scientific notation when it is expressed in the form below where a is greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10, and n is an integer.
3
Standard Notation to Scientific Notation 1.If the first number is greater than or equal to 10, move the decimal n places to the left to make the number equal to or less than 10. Then, write the number in scientific notation. 2.If the first number is less than 1, move the decimal n places to the right to make the number greater than or equal to 10. Then, write the number in scientific notation.
4
Standard Notation to Scientific Notation Ex. 1) Write 73,200 in scientific notation. Ex.2) Write 0.0000732 in scientific notation.
5
Scientific Notation to Standard Notation 1.If the exponent is positive, move the decimal of a to the right n places 2.If the exponent is negative, move the decimal of a to the left n places.

Compute with Scientific Notation To add or subtract numbers: Convert one of the numbers so that both numbers are multiplied to the same power of ten. Convert one of the numbers so that both numbers are multiplied to the same power of ten. Add or subtract the numbers multiplied by the powers of 10. Add or subtract the numbers multiplied by the powers of 10.

Estimate with Scientific Notation Numbers can be approximated using scientific notation where a whole number is multiplied by a power of 10. Ex.9) Ex.9) The equatorial radius of Saturn is 60,268 kilometers. What is a reasonable estimate for the equatorial radius of Saturn?
