Genetic Engineering Notes
2
Prior Knowledge 1. What do you know about genetic engineering? Cloning? Selective breeding?
3
Genetic Engineering: What Is It? It’s when DNA is purposely manipulated or changed for a specific purpose.
4
Genetic Engineering Watch the Genetic Engineering Animation Genetic Engineering AnimationGenetic Engineering Animation 2. Do you think it’s a good idea to change bacteria genes to produce insulin for people with diabetes? Why or why not?
5
Selective Breeding Watch Desirable Breeding Traits in Cattle. Desirable Breeding Traits in CattleDesirable Breeding Traits in Cattle 3. What do you think selective breeding is after watching this video? 4. Can you think of examples of other animals that humans have selectively bred?
6
Cloning Watch the Brainpop videos Username: nfmsbrain Username: nfmsbrain Password: pop Password: pop Brainpop Cloning Brainpop Cloning Dolly the Sheep Dolly the Sheep 5. What do you think cloning is after watching this video? 6. Do you think cloning is a good idea? Why or why not?
7
Definitions Genetic Engineering- inserting genes from one organism into another organism’s DNA to produce desired traits Selective Breeding- choosing and selecting organisms with desired traits to breed and produce offspring with those traits in mind Cloning- creating an organism that has the exact same DNA as another organism
8
Definitions Human Genome Project- an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the sequence of base pairs which make up human DNA, and of identifying and mapping all of the genes of the human genome. World’s largest collaborative biological project completed in 2003. We have 20,500 genes!
9
Human Genome Project Why? Help us understand diseases Identify mutations linked to cancers Help design medications and more accurate prediction of their effects Advancement of forensic science Bioarcheology
10
Your Turn- You Decide Pick one issue to learn more about. These are your choices: Genetic Engineering in Agriculture & Foods Human Genome Mapping Genetic Engineering in Humans Genetic Engineering in Endangered Animals DNA and Criminals Watch the videos on the slide you selected.
11
Your Turn- You Decide Answer the following questions on the last sheet of your notes: Write what you think are the pros and cons of your issue (at least three of each). Write about possible ethical problems relating to your issue. Write questions you have about the processes you are learning about.
