2. University of Siena The University of Siena is one of Europe’s oldest Universities. Since its foundation on December 26 1240, the year when the Podestà of Siena signed the first document testifying the existence of a Studium financed by the local authority, its history has been closely linked to that of the town, which has always shared a strong international vocation, promoting international agreements and cooperation. University of Siena Today, with over 760 years of history, the University of Siena is a vanguard in the national and international scene with a vast choice of degree courses in Siena and in the other University centres of Arezzo and Grosseto. From the 13 th century Siena was an important international economic and artistic centre: its merchants and bankers kept close ties with the most important European commercial centres.
