3  It all begins with Saying Goodbye:  High School Friends  Full time parents, teachers, and family  Familiar surroundings  Scheduled programming

4  Independence  Responsibility  Meeting New People  New Surroundings  Intellectual & Personal Growth

5  Adjusting to new surrounding  Making Responsible Decisions  Taking on New Responsibilities  Getting Lost  Possible Loneliness & doubts  Emotional Highs & Lows  Socially meeting new people with diverse backgrounds

6  Room mates  Communal Bathrooms  Laundry  Personalizing a shared space

7  You will not agree all the time!  Discuss important issues within the first days & set “house rules”  Example: Guests, Studying, TV, Telephone etc  Learn the Art of Compromise  You are not the only one in the room  DO:Don’t:  Share responsibilitiesBorrow/Lend $  Communication concerns Leave Issues alone  Show respect

8  GO TO CLASS  Sit in the Front or relatively close  Buy a large planning calendar  Make sure you have a wrist watch  Learn to Function Independently  Manage Time by dividing it by the following:  NeedsDesiresObligations  Analyze, Organize, Prioritize so you can discern the difference between Needs & Desires

9  Make a Time Budget  Remember you are here for a degree not a JOB  Make a Money Budget  Spend Wisely  Use student discounts when you can  Buy used books when possible  Limit or have no credit cards  Have an account in your college community

10  Make New Friends  Take the first step and introduce yourself  Attend Campus Events during K-Week  Get involved! ( remember not too much)  Assert yourself! Communicate Clearly  Go Slowly! Meaningful friendships etc take time to develop

11  The student Health Center (Rose street)  The Career Counseling Office: Stuckert Career Center  Campus Ministry Programs  Deans, Instructors, and Faculty Advisors  Campus Counseling Center in Frazee Hall  Tutoring Centers (SSS, the Study, & your college professor/TA)  Your FG, FS, RS, WCP, SSS etc Advisors
