2 PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS Geology is the study of the earth’s surface. Since the earth began it has been _________________. Geologists study changes and explain the causes and effects and _________________ the future changes.

3 Tootsie pop of the Universe The Earth’s Layers Core-consists of hot metal, mainly iron mixed with nickel. Mantle-a thick layer of rock about 1,800 miles thick. Crust-rocky, surface layer that is very thin.

4 Too Much Stress Magma- molten or liquid rock that applies pressure to the surface of the earth. Faults-movement that causes the earth’s crust to break.

5 Types of Plate Movements Subduction-one layer of the crust goes under the other. Spreading-when the surface of the earth pulls apart.

6 Types of Plate Movements Converging-when the layer of the earth is crashing into one another. Faulting-when the surface is rubbing against each other in opposite direction.
