Introduction Second largest contributor to GDP – 19.8 % (2008) Formal sector employment – 16% (2005) Informal sector - 73 % (2005) Key linkage to industry especially processed food and textiles Source of foreign exchange e.g., cotton, sugar, tobacco etc 3

Overall Objectives Provide information and analyze recent trends in agricultural productivity, agricultural trade, livelihoods; Identify the role of and constraints faced by small scale farmers: rural livelihoods, productivity; Identify constraints to trade/trade facilitation within the context of a landlocked country; Identify and highlight role of main donors; To contribute to the finding of solutions through a coherent policy framework that will assist Zambia in meeting the objectives of Vision 2030. 4

Methods and Data Employ both primary and secondary data sources Productivity, exports and employment and agriculture output indicators generation will Review of secondary data sources – constraints, etc. Interviews with key stake holders – such as export promotion agency – ZDA, Trade facilitating agencies e.g., ZRA, Mt makulu, small scale farmers union etc 5

Cont’d Case study of selected product – primary data collection - sample of one district Some crops under out grower schemes Triangulate various data sources e.g., post harvest report, Trade data, ( take into account value addition) export commodity Vs. area and poverty levels as reported by CSO 6
