PATTERNS OF GROWTH
2
3 PATTERNS PLANTS ARE PLACED INTO 3 GROUPS ACCORDING TO HOW LONG IT TAKES THEM TO PRODUCE FLOWERS ANNUALS BIENNIALS PERENNIALS
3
ANNUALS COMPLETE THEIR LIFE CYCLE IN ONE GROWING SEASON THEY GROW, PRODUCE FLOWERS THEN DIE EX. MARIGOLDS, PETUNIAS AND MOST GRAINS
4
BIENNIALS Complete their life cycle in two growing seasons 1 st season-produce roots stems and leaves all dies except the roots 2 nd season- leaves and stems grow back and produce seeds and flowers, then it dies Ex. Beets, carrots, celery
5
PERENNIALS Come back to life every year Leaves and stems die each year and are renewed each spring Ex. Lilacs, rhododendron bushes, begonias
6
TROPISM STIMULUS: something in a plants environment that causes a reaction Plants will change the way it grows TROPISM: growth of a plant towards or away from a stimulus
7
TROPISM What causes the bending? Uneven growth of cells along the outside of stem The cells on the shadier side elongate faster than those on the lit side, and the plant bends toward the light
8
TROPISM POSITIVE tropism: grows towards the stimulus Ex. Plant bends towards the sun NEGATIVE tropism: grows away from the stimulus Ex. Roots grow away from the sun
9
2 TYPES OF TROPISM PHOTOTROPISM: Growing towards or away from light EX. An unturned plant will bend towards a window GRAVITROPISM: growing with or against gravity Roots: positive gravitropism…grow down Stems: negative gravitropism…grow up
