Symbian Symbian OS is an operating system and software platform that designed for smart phones and maintained by Nokia. Symbian platform includes a user interface based on S60. Symbian OS originally developed to runs exclusively on ARM processors. Purpose: To be an operating system for the smart phones that support a lot of features and applications 2

Symbian OS was developed by symbian LTD,that sold it to nokia company in December 2008. The first announced of symbian was in June 2008 and which officially launched in April 2009 3

Symbian has released a series of so in the following style symbian^1, symbian^2,… Symbian^1 was the first release of the symbian OS and it was support the basic platform for the smart phones. Symbian^2 was the first royalty-free version of Symbian Symbian^3 released in feb-2010 and designed to be the next generation smart phones platform, winch support a lot of new features like the 2D and 3D graphic architectures,also its support the HDMI “external displays”. Its released in sep-2010. The first use of Symbian^3 was over 4 nokia smart phoned models “N8,C6-01,E7-00,C7-00”. Symbian^4 expected to be released in the first half of 2011 but nokia announced that symbian^4 will not be released, however the needed improvement will be like an updated for the Symbian^3 4

Till the symbian^3, symbian was use S60 User Interface that designed to be manipulated by a keyboard-like interface. Symbian^3 includes the Qt framework, which is now the recommended user interface toolkit for new applications. Qt can also be installed on older Symbian devices. A new Graphical User Interface was suggested to be used by the symbian^4 that support a special features for the touch based interface. 6

browser Symbian was the first Smartphone's platform that support webkit but earlier the sybmian^3 has more new webkits witch QT- based browser Applications and development Can use a lot of development environments like python for S60 and adobe Flash, Java me, Flash Lite, Ruby,.NET, Web Runtime (WRT) …. 7

We will take one of the symbian OS version and have some feature of it “Symbian^3” Support multi-touch input. More than one home screen. All of the wifi versions B,G,N. USB on-the-go. FM radio Adobe flash ARM CPU architecture The main files operation “Copy, Cut, Paste”. Special web-kit browser. POP3,IMAP Email sync protocols. Multitasking. Bluetooth, skype, facebook,…. Support Text document, Audio, Video, Video- conference front video camera. 8

As we know now the Smartphone's become almost similar in features and its use a different OS types, We will talk some about the N8, I-phone 4. We will compare the features of the following” screen, camera, features and applications 9

SYMPIAN^3 THAT’S USED IN N8 I PHONE OS THAT USED IN PHONE 4 Screen: N8 use 360 x 640 pixels 3.5-inch touch screen. Camera: use powerful 12-megapixel camera and Xenon Flash Application: along time there is a lot of application but its still few and slower to be compared with the I phone Features/Quirks The Nokia N8 features an HDMI port and Dolby Digital Plus surround stereo, Xenon Flash, 12 megapixel camera, Ovi Services, 48GB of storage with a micro SD card, 720p video and it comes in multiple colors. Screen : use 640 x 960 pixel display, is the same size as the Nokia N8’s Camera: only use 5-megapixels camera Applications : on the iPhone are far superior than those found on both Android, RIM, Windows and Symbian Features: The iPhone however pack in Retina Display technology, applications, glass casing, three-axis gyro sensor, 326ppi display, games, apps folders, 64GB of storage and the impressive, power- saving, Apple A4 Processor 10

Statistics published for the second quarter of 2010 showed that Symbian devices comprised a 41.2% share of smart mobile devices sold, with RIM having 18.2%, Android having 17.2%, and Apple having 15.1% (through iPhone OS) Previous reports on device shipments as published in February 2010 showed that the Symbian devices comprised a 47.2% share of the smart mobile devices shipped in 2009, with RIM having 20.8%, Apple having 15.1% (through iPhone OS) 11

As nokia announced that it will make the needed improvements like updates for the symbian^3 and it will not release the symbian^4 till now As we said b4 it’s the symbian^4 Witch will support the touch-based interface with more functionality, but Nokia it would be migrate the symbian to windows phone 7 12
