1 Welcome to Mrs. Sisock’s Second Grade Class in Room B105

2 Welcome Parents: On the index card on your child’s desk please write –Your child’s name –Your name –Your home phone number and cell phone number –Your email address if you have one –Anything else you would like me to know about your child.

3 Mrs. Sisock This is my 7 th year teaching 2 nd grade at Bermudian Springs. I graduated from Shippensburg. I live in Dillsburg with my husband and our Brittany Spaniel named Jasmine. I have a niece and nephew that I adore that live in Virginia.

4 Curriculum Subjects taught: reading, spelling, English, math, handwriting, science, and social studies Grading: –Percentages and letter grades given for reading, spelling, and English. –O,S,N scale used for handwriting, science, and social studies –Checklists used for math to show adequate and non-adequate progress

5 Reading Focus on a different reading strategy each week – will include reading various books and completing activities dealing with that strategy Students will be graded on an activity dealing with the reading strategy for that week. Weekly story tests (with vocab words) –Story tests go along with the stories in our reading anthology –Vocabulary lists for these stories will be sent home at the beginning of the week –Tests will most often be on Fridays

6 Spelling We will be using ‘Words Their Way’ lists. Students will have different lists based on their individual needs. We will practice and do activities during class. Tests will be every other Friday. Give me 5 homework. Children will be working on print and cursive throughout the year. Handwriting

7 Math Homelinks will be sent home to be completed as homework after each lesson to review the skills taught. Review and test after each unit –Review will be sent home to be completed as homework –Test will include two parts: Part A - tested on material from that unit Part B – previews material that will be taught in upcoming units

8 English Mini-lessons and practice worksheets Used in addition with the reading program Reviews will be completed at home and checked at school. Four units: Matter, Sun and Moon, Plants, Animals/Habitats Students will be graded on activities and worksheets completed during class time. Science

9 Social Studies Six units: (1) People All Around, (2) Earth, Our Home, (3) A Working World, (4) We the People, (5) Discovering Our Past, (6) People, Places, and Holidays Review and test following each unit Reviews will be sent home to complete as homework and checked at school Review questions will be found in the book and answers will be written on a worksheet.

10 Weekly Routine Homework folders – go home every night, returned every day -Anything your child needs to do (or you need to return) will be in the “Return” pocket; items in the “Keep” pocket stay at home. Please check the folders each night. -Homelinks will go home almost every night -A reading log will go home weekly to be signed and returned.

11 Discipline System Cards: –Green – Good where everyone starts –Yellow – Needed a warning –Orange – Lose 5 minutes of recess –Red – Lose a whole recess and get a note home I also keep track of homework and it is very important that your child keeps up with their homework. I understand emergencies come up and it doesn’t get done. Please send me a note. Students get 3 strikes and then stay in from recess to do their work.

12 Jungle Theme This year we have a Jungle/Safari Theme –A tiger was adopted in the name of this class. –Goal: to help students understand the reality of endangered species –At the end of the year we do jungle themed activities!

13 Student of the Week TOP CAT OF THE WEEK Every student will get one turn. They will fill out the poster. It is a way for kids to get to know each other. The TOP CAT will also get to be in charge of the stuffed cheetah for the week. Core Kid lunches –Wear the color of the month Consists of several lessons each month discussing the monthly character trait Core Essentials

14 Newsletters Class newsletters will be sent home weekly as well as posted on the website. –Called the Sisock Cirrcular You will also receive a parent letter with the math program at the start of each unit with the answers to the math homework.

15 Class Website http://sisock.wikispaces.com/ Sisock.wikispaces.com –Here you can find each night’s homework, upcoming events, newsletters, resources and more. –I also include pictures of the students in different activities. A permission slip will be sent home asking permission to put your child’s picture on the website.

16 Snacks and Treats I do allow for a snack time in class after last recess, but I do not provide the snacks so donations are greatly appreciated. Birthday Treats are also fine, but please let me know ahead of time if you will be sending something in. We do have the following food allergies in the class so please be mindful of that when possible. –egg, dairy, bananas, peanuts

18 Parent Volunteers Parent volunteers are welcome. –Volunteers: check papers, read with students, do learning centers, staple, paper cutting, etc. Please indicate your interest and availability on the back of your index card. Please indicate your interest even if you can only volunteer sporadically.

19 Important Information and Forms For the first week bring in the following: –4 quarters –10 dimesin a marked bag or –10 nickelsenvelope –15 pennies –An old clean sock to clean white boards –One binder Internet Papers Designated Homework Person Other items to consider: –Pencils, dry erase markers, washable markers
