1 The Phosphocreatine System Aims: To understand the re-synthesis of ATP through phosphocreatine system. To know what sporting activities predominantly use this energy system. To know the advantages and disadvantages of this energy system.

2 Group tasks. Recap previous weeks work (ATP). Read and take notes on the Phosphocreatine energy system. Why is it known as a coupled reaction? Write 3 sporting examples were this energy system is predominantly used. You need to know the +/- about this energy system.

3 Individual Questions. 1. Why is the phosphocreatine energy system a coupled reaction [1]? Answer: because the energy produced in one reaction is used by another reaction. 2.Write an equation showing the resynthesis of ATP using the phosphocreatine system [2]. Answer: PC=P+C+ENERGY (exothermic) ENERGY+ADP+P=ATP (endo)

4 3. Describe 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of the phosphocreatine energy system [4]. Advantage.Disadvantage. Provides ATP re-synthesis quickly.Small amount stored in muscle cells. O2 is not required. One mole of ATP is re-synthesised form one mole of PC. No harmful by-productsProvides energy for 10secs.
