Math 7 Combine Like Terms
2
Title: Combine Like Terms Objective: To combine like terms EQ: How do I combine Like Terms? In your INB, Page
3
Vocabulary Terms Coefficient Parts of algebraic expressions that are separated by plus or minus signs Example: The terms of 2x + 3 are 2x and 3 The number in a term that is the product of a number and a variable; the number is the coefficient Example: The coefficient of 2x + 3 is 2.
4
Constant term Like terms A term that has a number but no variable Example: In the expression 5y + 9, the term 9 is a constant term. Terms that have identical variable parts with corresponding variables raised to the same power (two or more constant terms are considered like terms) Example: In the expression x + 4 – 2x + 1, x and -2x are like terms and 4 and 1 are like terms
5
Example #1 First Step: Write the Problem Identify like terms of the expression. 1.-3z + 1 + 4z
6
Example #1 Second Step: Identify the like terms, of the expression. 1.-3z + 1 + 4z like terms: -3z and 4z What are the like terms?
7
Example #2 First Step: Write the Problem Identify the like terms of the expression. 2. 15 – 9r + 7r - 6
8
Example #2 Second Step: Identify the like terms of the expression. 2. 15 – 9r + 7r - 6 like terms: -9r, 7r and 15 and -6 What are the like terms?
9
Example #3 First Step: Write the Problem Identify the like terms of the expression. 3. 2y + 8 – 2y – 4
10
Example #3 Second Step: Identify the like terms of the expression. 3. 2y + 8 – 2y – 4 like terms: 2y, -2y and 8, -4 What are the like terms?
11
Combine Like Terms Step 1: Group the like terms together 2y + 8 – 2y – 4 2y - 2y +8 -4 Step 2: perform the operation on each group of like terms. What is 2y-2y? What is 8-4? Step 3: Write the finished expression 4
12
Combine Like Terms - Example 4 Step 1: Group the like terms together 3x + 7 + 2 + 4x - 3 3x + 4x 7 + 2 -3 Step 2: perform the operation on each group of like terms. What is 3x + 4x? What is 7 + 2 - 3? Step 3: Write the finished expression 7x + 6
13
Example #5-9 Write the problem and combine the like terms 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
