Objectives Discuss functions of the respiratory system List major organs of the respiratory system Investigate and analyze internal and external respiration Mechanisms that regulate respiration
3
Inquiring Minds want to know… What is the function of the respiratory system?
4
Respiratory System Functions: Distributes air Exchanges gasses Effective Filterer Dynamic Warmer Super Humidifier

7
Passive Transport Diffusion: responsible for the gas exchange in the respiratory system.

Cellular Respiration When humans breathe, laugh or talk, we release carbon dioxide. This process is called cellular respiration. In cellular respiration, humans take in food and oxygen and release carbon dioxide and water to produce energy. Respiration= C6H12O6 (glucose) + 6O2 (oxygen)-----------> 6CO2 +6H2O + energy
15
Breathing mechanics Inspiration Expiration Inhalation- moves air into the lungs Diaphragm: muscles separating the abdomen from thoracic cavity Exhalation- moves air out of the lungs Figure 14-11 page 376
