1 Section 2: Independence Essential Question: Describe the first two attempts by the colonists to unify, Explain the impact that the Stamp act had on the colonists, Evaluate which of the ideals behind the Declaration of independence was most important, List how were the governments of the newly independent states similar?

2 Section 2: Independence Attempts at unity: New England Confederation of 1643 Agreement to work together to defend against Native Americans and Non-English settlers Problem?- If one colony disagrees with the confederation, it cannot act Albany Plan of Union Agreement called for council of representatives to vote on raising taxes or raising an army. Problem? Colonies and English govt. did not want to allow others to have these powers over them.

3 Section 2: Independence British policies that brought the colonies together: In 1760 King George take British throne England takes part in “Seven-years-war” goes heavily into debt. In 1765, Passes Stamp Act requiring colonists to pay a tax on any paper goods (newspaper, contract, playing cards etc.) This also made non-British trade goods more expensive Colonists are angry! Why pay taxes with no representation in parliament?

4 Section 2: Independence  Colonial Response:  Boycott of British Goods (thereby not paying taxes)  Britain is angry and sends over troops  Colonists respond by forming resistance groups and destroying British goods (Boston Tea Party)  War was declared and fought between Colonists and England  In 1776 Thomas Jefferson writes Declaration of Independence declaring official separation from England
