Welcome to Advisory! Week of August 18, 2014
2
What is Advisory? This is a grade specific class that meets every day for 18 minutes. The bulletin will be read each day. Monday and Wednesday are advisory days. On these days you will be involved in grade level and school-wide activities. (Your teacher may adjust these days as needed.) Tuesday and Thursday are tutorial days. These days are devoted to silent reading, studying for classes, binder/planner checks, grade checks, or completing assignments. Friday is the catch-up day or Fun Friday – depending on the week’s events and progress.

Does this class count? YES!! This is a “Credit” or “No Credit” class. Good participation and regular attendance are the two ways to ensure you will pass advisory. This class adheres to the 15-day absence policy, so don’t cut class! “NC” (no credit) on your progress report or report card will calculate into your grade point average as an “F.” An “NC” grade could make you ineligible to participate in extra- curricular activities. At the end of the semester if you fulfill the requirements for this class, you will earn one credit towards graduation.

The topics will be new! The focus for each grade is a little different. Here are the themes for the four grade levels: 9 th Grade: Make the Most of High School 10 th Grade: Careers - Who am I and what do I want to be? 11 th Grade: Planning For My Future 12 th Grade: Life After High School

Your Advisory Folder Your teacher will distribute a colored file folder to you. In your best printing, write your first and last name on the tab of the folder. You will use this folder next FOUR years to keep all your advisory papers safe. Many of these papers will be required as part of your senior portfolio so don’t lose them!

Let’s start the year off GREAT! Today is the day we discuss the tools necessary to succeed in school. Take out your daily planner. Did you write down your assignments from your first period class? Do this after every class - each day!!! All students are required to have a planner, binder, paper, and pencil at school every day. Do you have these tools? If not, visit the counseling office and they will help you get what you need.

Remember….. Be on-time to class. Your punctuality tells everyone in the room about your level of commitment to school. Don’t get distracted. Turn off your phone; leave your iPod at home; and take advantage of your free education. After high school, you will find your education can be very EXPENSIVE. ASK QUESTIONS! The most successful people in the world will all tell you that it’s smart to ask questions.
