Course Outline

Questions?

Unit D: Changes in Living Systems Outline Key Concepts Biotic and Abiotic Factors Population size Primary and secondary succession Habitat destruction, reclamation Species diversity

Unit D: Changes in Living Systems Outline Key Concepts Human interventions in biogeochemical Autotrophs, heterotrophs, food chains, food webs Trophic levels, biomass, energy and pyramids Human population growth, biodiversity and carrying capacity Adaptation of organisms, natural selection Evidence for the theory of evolution

1.1 Water: An Essential Abiotic Factor There are both Abiotic and Biotic Factors in the environment and ecosystems. Abiotic factors are physical, non living parts of the environment Biotic factors are living organisms in the environment Ecosystems are all the organisms in an area as well as the abiotic factors which they interact.

Activity Separate the following into Abiotic and Biotic Factors. Whale Clock Water Fish Paper Glass Aluminum Steak Wooden Ruler Sand Clouds Snail Pork Chops Salad Bread Plant

Why Is Water is the Essential Abiotic Factor? It is 70 %- 95% of all cells Solvent of life as many ionic components are dissolved in water and are transported between living cells in fluids Usually connection between all abiotic factors and water
