Target Audience Statement “A good teacher, like a good entertainer first must hold his audience’s attention, then he can teach his lesson.” – John H. Clarke BioMo is aimed at high school students and teachers. It will serve as a virtual guide for the most common biological science laboratory techniques that are used widely in research. The videos and animations for these techniques would be accessible through the BioMo website along with guidelines for inquiry-based learning.
7
Target Audience Statement Teachers in the traditional classroom have very less time for interaction with students. BioMo would serve as a helping hand for teachers so that classes would be more ‘humanized’. Courtesy: www.knewton.com

Target Audience Statement Different students learn at different pace. Some will grasp the concepts in one class while others won’t. BioMo would serve as their guide to reflect on the techniques without relying on the teacher so that they would have their own processing time. Courtesy: BSEMD Commercial

Educational Design Strategy Statement The repercussions of not having a strong foundation in biological science laboratories are many. There’s a lack of strong background in these techniques that are usually taught in high school biology classes, which are in turn reflected in poor research understanding in higher studies. BioMo implements the principle of flipped classroom approach and inquiry-based learning to provide a virtual guide for learning biological science laboratory techniques.
11
Educational Design Strategy Statement Flipped Classroom Approach The flipped classroom approach would be carried out through the use of videos and animations. The at-home lectures would provide students with the necessary processing time in preparation for their in-classroom activities/laboratory classes and discussion with peers and teachers. 12
Educational Design Strategy Statement Inquiry based learning (IBL) The IBL approach would be implemented through guided questions which would lead to different axes of understanding in the student’s mind. All students have access to supportive, excellent undergraduate education in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology, and all students learn these subjects by direct experience with the methods and processes of inquiry. (NSF, 1996, p.6) Problem-solving skill development Learning disciplinary content Application of concepts to new problems Student-ownership development

Media Strategy The success of a flipped classroom approach depends on effective media content. The media techniques that I would be integrating in my project are high resolution videos and animations. As I complete more of my project, my media strategy would evolve and be ready by the end of September 2014.

Background content and coursework Developmental Biology Ecology Conservation biology Experimental evolution The science content of the project would be based on the foundation of the biological sciences coursework that I’ve completed in the past 3 quarters. The basic science is based on ecology. Knowing our surroundings and the biological life around us lies at the crux of our biological studies.
17
Background content and coursework In the wake of the global changes in the modern world it is imperative for us to know about the theories and hypotheses behind evolution and conservation biology. Human beings have to understand and start empathizing the world they are surrounded by. To understand the two sciences, we need to go back to the beginning of the world, of how we came to be. Developmental biology, though a pretty complex topic to be dealt with in high school levels, will be sprinkled onto different parts of the lessons to give the students a basic foundation of the world of development which only starts with reproduction.
