Draw a rectangle (or square) around the triangle The area of this rectangle = 1 square The triangle is ½ of the rectangle so its area = ½ square Area of triangle = ½ square

Calculating Area The area of the triangle can be calculated by taking away the area of the 2 white triangles

Calculating Area The area of the surrounding rectangle = 2 squares So the area of the second white triangle = 1 square
