3. NEW INFORMATION We measure very large areas, like the area of a city or a country in square kilometres (km²). We measure large areas, such as the area of a park, in hectares. Hectares can be written as ha. A square with sides of 100m has an area of 1ha. 1ha = 10 000m²

In order to find the length of the Parkes area on the map to the nearest m²: The length of the rectangle is 20mm. The width of the rectangle is 12mm The scale is given as 1:25 000 This means each 1mm on the map is 25 000mm or 25mm in real life Real width = 12 x 25 000 = 530 000mm = 300m Real length = 20 x 25 000 = 500 000mm = 500m Area of the rectangle = Length x Width = 500 x 300m = 150 000m²
