The US Emerges as a World Power
1. Imperialism- The practice of strong countries taking economic, political, and military power over weaker countries. 2. Spanish-American War- A conflict in 1898 that began with the US coming to the aid of Cuba against Spain. It ended with the Americans defeating the Spanish and acquiring Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam.

3. Treaty of Paris- A treaty that ended the Spanish-American War 4. Big-Stick Diplomacy(Roosevelt Corollary)- an extension of the Monroe Doctrine, announced by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1904, under which the U.S. claimed the right to protect its economic interests by means of military intervention in the affair of Western Hemisphere nations.

5. Dollar Diplomacy- The U.S. foreign policy under President Taft, that used U.S. economic power to exercise influence over other countries. 6. Missionary/Moral Diplomacy- The foreign policy under President Woodrow Wilson, that stated the U.S. had a moral responsibility to deny recognition to any Latin American government it viewed as oppressive, undemocratic, or hostile to U.S. interest.

7. Espionage and Sedition Acts- Laws enacted in 1917 and 1918, that imposed harsh penalties on anyone interfering with or speaking against U.S. participation in World War I. 8. Treaty of Versailles- The 1919 peace treaty at the end of World War I which established new nations, borders, and war reparations.

9. Isolationism- Opposition to political and economic entanglements with other countries.
