1 December 1 DO The students will make a model of a volcano and learn about different kinds of volcanoes. DQ Bell Work (in notebooks) 1.What is the difference between magma and lava? 2.What kind of rock is made from hardened magma or lava? 3.Name 3 different volcanic rocks that you have learned about this year. #37 Volcanic Landforms page D9-D13 (google doc. shared with me, allow comments)

2 Lab #37 Assignment Requirements  Title & Name, Date, Period  Problem Statement  Background Research 3 sentence Paragraph (Review information slide, but do not copy it!)  Hypothesis- Copy and complete this statement: “If volcanoes produce different kinds of lava, then, lava that has more gas in it will be more or less explosive (choose one), because __________________ (fill in reasoning).  Variables IV, DV, + Constants  Procedure (Summarize parts A & B in 4 steps)  Data Table- Copied from page D-10  Analysis Questions- Answer in complete sentences.

3 #37 Volcanic Landforms Background Information (do not copy!) Molten rock below the surface of the earth is known as magma. Magma collects in pockets a few miles under the surface and as pressure build it forces its way up and eventually causes a volcanic eruption through a vent, or opening in the crust. The cooled magma around a vent forms a conical shaped landform called a volcano. The word volcano is derived from the Roman God of Fire, Vulcan.

4 Magma contains mostly oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, titanium, manganese. Magma in earth’s surface is called lava. Lava has different consistencies due to what it is made of. All magma contains gases. Volcanoes explode due to the release of gases. The strength of an eruption is due to what the magma is made of and how much gas it contains.
