The Battle of Vicksburg

 How was the Battle of Vicksburg started?  What were the different fighting techniques used during the battle?  How did the battle affect the people living during this time?  What problems did this battle cause the soldiers?  Why did the Confederates surrender ?

The battle of Vicksburg took place during the Civil War in 1863. Many different battles were taken place in multiple different cities around the U.S., each with it’s own outcome. During the Battle of Vicksburg the Union troops main reason to attack Confederates was because they wanted full control over the Mississippi River.

Since there was a large hill in the town of Vicksburg it was “easy to defend but difficult to capture" (Hart 316). Confederates had full control over the Mississippi, making it almost impossible for the northerners to use it. The Confederate troops were stationed on top of the hill attacking downward, while Union troops were firing back from below.

With all the chaos and craziness during the battle of Vicksburg, people were forced to live differently then they were before. Fires, bombs, and missals flew every which way, killing and wounding local people. After this, Union forces started destroying farmer’s properties, leaving people starving and homeless.

During the Battle of Vicksburg, soldiers would often lack food and ammunition, making it difficult to fight back. Both sides were struggling with food since there was a blockade of imported goods from other countries. Many soldiers would die from starvation and abrasions.

Through all the hardships the soldiers were facing, both sides fought as hard as they could. After three hard months of suffering, the Confederates surrendered because of shortage of food and ammunition. The Union had a great victory, and attained the Mississippi River.
