Ulysses S Grant and the fight for the Mississippi ► In the South, in 1862-1863, Ulysses S Grant was leading Union forces on a string of victories from Tennessee into Mississippi to capture the Mississippi River and cut the south in two. ► Grant’s success in these operations brought him to Lincoln’s attention and lead to him being named to command the Army of the Potomac for the rest of the war.
