Introduction Our health and sport have a great impact on everybody’s daily life. So what if you are disabled or even more specifically mentally disabled?, would you still be able to play sports? And what kind of sports will affect negatively or positively on your mental health? These are only some question that can be answered in this PowerPoint presentation. So enjoy the info.

Depression is a prevalent problem in today’s society. Clinical depression affects 2–5% of Americans each year and it is estimated that patients suffering from clinical depression make up 6–8% of general medical practices. During the 1990s there have been five meta-analytic reviews Across these five meta-analytic reviews, the results consistently show that both acute and chronic exercise are related to a significant reduction in depression. Exercise is not only important for your physics health, but also good for maintaining your mental health. You can do yoga, jogging, swimming or other sport that you like.

Strength training: Strength training involves isometric exercises or weight training. Strength training improves strength, bone health, and daily function. Aerobic activity: Aerobic activity is any activity that involves the repeated use of large muscle groups. These activities, such as walking, jogging, cycling, or using a wheelchair, raise endurance. They improve the function of the heart and lungs.

Special Olympics Over the past 30 years, there has been a major increase in opportunities for sports and physical activities for persons with mental retardation. This is due in large part to the efforts of groups like the Special Olympics. Competition, in and of itself, is a reward. Special Olympics athletes represent the true Olympic ideal. Special Olympics stress the joy that comes with physical activity and competition. This approach is shown by its motto. It reads: "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in my attempt”.

When you are in a team you work with other people, so your with friends and your mental health is better. Self-confidence is important when you play sport, you lose self-confidence when you play in individual sports because everyone is focused on you, this can make you sad. In teams if your self-confidence is low then your team can even it out. Less pressure is then put onto you. Advantages working in team sports – not everything depends on your skills and you, your not the only one make hard decisions and you learn to co-operate. Advantages working in individual sports - you control everything, not everyone will rely on you to do something (less stress) and you can learn to do things by yourself which can affect your life and mental health.

The physical effects – help you maintain weight, avoid of gaining a lot of weight, increases metabolic rates and maintains a healthy body weight. Playing sports is good for your bones. Mental effects – it can relief your stress level, it helps your physiological health, helps people with depression and disorders and promoted self esteem. It also makes you act differently around friends and gives you social interaction with other people Your body produces endorphins when you play sport which relieve pain, reduce stress, enhance your immune system and post-pone your aging processes.
