1 Chutes and Ladders Game Design by Diane Barton and Todd Gruhn

2 Game Design – Modification of Existing Game Game is modeled from child’s board game Chutes and Ladders Design is going to be made by Programming Students later in school year There are notations for the basic data structures (array of 100 squares) and pieces of code that the students may have already written (a dice roll) Students reviewed the preliminary specifications and thought it was satisfactory for beginning to code project

3 Chutes & Ladders Senior Edition – Modifications to Original Game Game will be computer game There can be up to 6 players instead of 2 or 3 Age range is 16-18 years old Players can make their own Avatar or can use colored token pieces Board game has 10 Chutes and 9 Ladders, new game has equal number of chutes and ladders

4 Original Game Board - Students are using Photoshop to edit game board to reflect the Chutes (downfalls) and Ladders (achievements) of a High School senior’s life - List of the downfalls and achievements have been given to programming students who are going to code the game

5 This is the modified game board in progress Each space will have picture or text regarding activities in a Seniors life like ordering Senior pictures, plans for Homecoming, Senior Prom, yearbook, ordering invitations for graduation, college Acceptance letters, taking AP tests, etc.

6 Downfalls (Chutes) 10 Chutes Big Chute – DWI after senior party, loss of scholarship, license, and criminal record Homecoming – exceeded budget with flowers, tux, dress, limo Started study group for ACT/SAT test Accepted into National Honor Society Awarded local scholarship for community service Organized Trash Pick Up Day – picture in newspaper Got caught cheating on exam – Zero for Mastery grade Plagiarized assignment – Zero for Mastery grade + Detention Party after Homecoming – grounded after getting home too late Teacher called parents about falling grades

7 Achievements (Ladders) 10 Ladders Big Ladder – Turn in college application, letters of recommendation, essays, financial aid form and scholarship forms on time Homecoming – go with special person named King and Queen Started study group for ACT/SAT test Selected to make speech at graduation Awarded local scholarship for community service Organized Trash Pick Up day and got picture in newspaper Made ACT/SAT score to go to college of choice Elected President of Club at School Elected to Homecoming Court

8 Reviewed by Teachers and Students Teachers felt great game for showing consequences of choices in school Teachers mentioned that many times students don’t see any bad things happening to them or their friends Students who are going to code game felt that there was enough information to make game work Students who are going to code game felt that they did not have enough programming knowledge right now to make game work so it was delayed until after Christmas break
