Eight Parts of Speech 1. Noun The name of a person, place, thing, or idea (girl, bull, island, map, sea, marriage, love, war) 2. Pronoun A word which takes the place of a noun (I, we, you, he, she, it, they, who, whose, whom) 3. Verb A word which expresses an action, state, or condition. (run, walk, climb, sing, dream, think, hope, be, become) 4. Adjective A word which describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. (large, bright, short, fat, any, some, this, that, which) 5. Adverb A word which describes or modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb. (not, well, easily, very, too, greatly) 6. Preposition A word which shows a relationship between a noun and a pronoun and another word in the sentence. (in, on, under, to, toward, near) 7. Conjunction A word which joins words or groups of words. (and, but, or, nor, for, yet, because) 8. Interjection A cry or expression of emotion. (ah, alas, O)
