Session 6 - LHC Installation Chamonix XV January 2006 T.Pettersson EDMS:7019253 Schedule Ramping-up of many new activities in 2005: –Repair, installation and tests of the QRL –Surface logistics, preparation and underground transports of magnets –Alignment, interconnect in a difficult environment (space & co- activities Good progress has been made but present rates have to be further increased to meet our success oriented schedule. E.g. magnet transport has doubled from a nominal 10/week to 20/week. Presentation indicated some areas of concern that are being attended to by the project. New official schedule will be released during the spring taking into account learning curves, resource allocations etc..

Session 6 - LHC Installation Chamonix XV January 2006 T.Pettersson EDMS:70192510 QRL - performance Cold reception tests performed for sectors 7-8 (A and B) and 8-1 Successful thermo-mechanical validation of the QRL design Thermometer accuracy, much better than specification Heat inleaks to 50-75 K (headers E and F) circuit within specification For sector 7-8 (sub-sectors A and B) heat inleaks to 4-20 K (headers B, C and D) above specification. For sector 8-1 heat inleaks to 4-20 K circuit are within specification Other QRL sectors cold tested with the cryo-magnets:

Session 6 - LHC Installation Chamonix XV January 2006 T.Pettersson EDMS:70192511 GENERAL COMMENTS Jan – April 2006:11’000 h scheduled in TS assembly workshop means 16 – 17 persons full time fully booked overtime work will be necessary All our jobs are on the LHC priority list (like the DFB’s, CMS ECAL, …) Only possibility for new items in this period: TS-MME helps in finding a solution towards outsourcing. Risks will have to be taken in outsourcing most of the activities for AT-VAC, which are not “multiple technology” items. This will require to monitor closely the production in industries (require also efforts). There are always LHC urgencies (LEIR, SSS in bldg 904, ATLAS) for specific welding requiring expertise. No manpower available for the collimators outside the people in the design area. Priority needed from AB on AB/ATB versus AB/BDI requests. MME Workpackages

Session 6 - LHC Installation Chamonix XV January 2006 T.Pettersson EDMS:70192514 Electrical Quality Assurance and Mr. Polarity Electrical Quality Assurance (AT-MEL-EM + HNINP) –To ensure the integrity of the electrical circuits during machine assembly and commissioning and to guarantee that the electrical interconnections correspond to the LHC powering layout. To ensure traceability of checks while considering all electrical non-conformities –ELQA is not concerned with the qualification of individual components (polarity, continuity, labeling, electrical integrity, voltage taps, magnet type and position) Magnet Polarity Coordination (Mr. Polarity) –To ensure the coherence in the definition of the magnet polarities among MAD input files, the LHC reference database, field computations, field measurements, interconnection works and the powering of electrical circuits –To liaise with the different groups responsible for production, measurement, interconnection and powering of the LHC magnets, including the magnets for the arcs, the insertion regions and the transfer lines.

Session 6 - LHC Installation Chamonix XV January 2006 T.Pettersson EDMS:70192516 Conclusions Schedule – good progress has been made but present rates have to be further increased to meet our success oriented schedule. Presentation indicated some areas of concern that are being attended to. New official schedule will be released during the spring. Security – accidents can and must be prevented. Responsibilities are DG- DH-GL-project engineer – no parallel hierarchy exists in matters of security. Access systems – LHC is back on track and doing good progress. SPS will be a major challenge to do in parallel. QRL – Supplier is getting closer to nominal rates. Issues about leak detection and repair will be permanently present. MME support – Presently there is no slack left in the group’s resource allocation. The design office and workshops are providing a major effort handling both planned and unplanned activities – Any new incidents or any badly organised projects will have to wait or will cause delays in other important activities. ELQA - Tools are ready. Strategy to be applied must include a global overview of the arcs (act locally, think globally). Treatment of non conformities is highly time consuming. As-built database mandatory.
