-More resources -Largest navy in the world -Fighting for a cause they strongly believed in -Foreign country support Disadvantages -Dealing with hostile citizens -Ship supplies across Atlantic Ocean -Had to hire mercenaries -Not well trained -Fighting with militia -Lack of experience

3 Fort Ticonderoga Captured by Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys
The fort provided access to Lake Champlian Ethan attacked during a storm and the British were caught off guard Patriots gain access to a large supply of cannons that could be used in later battles Outcome: Patriot victory

4 Battle of Bunker Hill -June 1775
Massachusetts is held under siege by Patriot minute men British are attempting to take over Charlestown (overlooks Boston) Colonial forces are warned and build defenses on Bunker and Breeds Hill Patriots surprise the British when they arrive; however, militia is low on ammo Militia led by William Prescott “Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” they fire and run out of ammo causing them to retreat William Howe is leading British (British win but suffer heavy casualties) Outcome: Showed colonist they can hold their own British victory

5 Battle of Trenton -December 1776
Occurred in Trenton, NJ German Hessians (soldiers fighting for Britain) are celebrating Christmas with wine, gifts, etc Washington crosses over the Delaware River on the 25th and surprise attack the Hessians on the 26th Battle lasted one hour Hessians are slow to respond, Patriots win Outcome: Inspired troops to stay loyal to losing army

7 Battle of Brandywine -1777 Occurred in PA
William Howe is leading Redcoats, Washington leading miltia Occurring on the way to Saratoga Minor skirmish on the way to meet at Albany, NY Patriots lose terribly! - Outcome: Patriot morale is extremely low!

8 Battle of Saratoga (Turning Point) -1777
3 pronged attack to meet at Albany, NY- attempt to cut off New England from the rest of colonies British (John Burgoyne)-March downwards into South, British (Barry Leger)- moves east, British (General Howe)-move North from NYC Howe and Leger are late, leaving Burgoyne badly outnumbered when he arrives Burgoyne surrenders to Continental Army leader (Horatio Gates) Turning point= increased foreign support (France, Spain) Marquise De Lafayette gives 200,000 of his own money for colonial efforts Outcome: Patriots win

9 Winter at Valley Forge -winter of 1777
Valley Forge PA- Washington settles troops for a period of time Experience food shortages, clothing shortages, people deserting, soldiers not getting paid, 1/5 of soldiers die to disease People lose faith in the Continental Army until Prussian officer, Fredrich Von Steuben (France) teaches American troops basic military skills ( militia ->well trained soldiers) France and Spain enter at critical time being that supplies are low Washington reads Paine’s “Crisis” pamphlet to increase morale

11 Siege at Yorktown Cornwallis (British General vs. Marquis de Lafayette (Patriots) Occurs in VA- Cornwallis trying to gain tighter control on southern colonies after Saratoga Washington and French General Rochambeau move troops south and surround Cornwallis who is badly outnumbered British navy try to help Cornwallis but French fleet drive them away Negotiate for days and Cornwallis surrenders Patriots win the war Outcome: British Prime Minister get word and states “It is all over”
