Trees, shrubs, and herbs 2000 species, 100- 146 genera Anthocyanins cause the flowers to change their color from red to blue when aging. (Anthos = Flowers) (Cyano=Blue) These are vacuolar pigments that can change from the colors red, purple or blue depending on the pH. Used for signaling pollinators. Most have hairy leaves Coarse hair is due to the silicon dioxide and calcium carbonate Radially symmetric 5-merous (5 petals, 5 stamens, and 1 pistil) The fruit is usually a dry capsule that separates into 4 hard, seed- like sections (nutlets) Simple alternate leaves Medicinal

Appendaged Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum appendiculatum) Also known as the Lavender Leaf Biennial Blooms primarily in moist deep woodland areas Small appendages between the sepals

Simple, alternate 5-merous Stamens are strongly exerted and conspicuous Grow in partial sun to light shade, mesic conditions, and a rich loamy soil with decaying leaves.
