How the average teacher uses a 50 minute class period ●2-3 minutes of review ●5 minutes of oral introduction ●10 minutes of introducing new grammar ●5 minutes of teaching new words ●10 minutes of reading the textbook ●10 minutes of reviewing the textbook’s content ● 7-8 minutes of other activities (worksheets, etc) Students have no opportunities to speak English during English class. This is a waste of time! We should make time for our students to use English.

Sometimes Japanese students make small presentations in English class. Please discuss how your students perform. Only memorized! No expression! Quiet voices! No eye contact!

Please watch our student’s video.

English presentations are important for our students. In order to effectively communicate in English in the future, students need to have opportunities to use English in class to help build confidence. Teachers have to make time for students to spontaneously use English during the school day.

Introduction of today’s activity “Let’s explain Japanese culture to tourists in English at the 2020 Olympics” Put 15-20 pictures on the blackboard. (For example: Japanese traditional things ) Give students time to choose one picture and think about an English explanation. Ask students to explain their choice in front of a teacher in English. Ask students to choose a different picture and use a different target grammar each class. Every English class students should have opportunities to use their knowledge of English to communicate.

Individual Performance Test (About one month later) ① Student chooses one picture to present to their ALT. ② Student prepares for about 30 seconds. ③ Student presents picture to ALT for one minute. ③ ALT asks students questions about the item they presented on for one minute.

Please watch our student’s video.

Results of our performance test Negatives Some students couldn’t utilize easy English to explain their pictures. Some students couldn’t produce more than 2-3 sentences. Positives All of our students tried to speak English. Most students were able to explain their picture for one minute. All students felt more confident in their English ability afterwards. Teachers should give their students opportunities to use English in their classes every day. Confident students are more likely to use English in the future.
