Monday, Oct 20 Lesson 6.5.1 Integers and Graphing

Objective: To use integers to represent real world situations.

Integers and Graphing Integers are all positive and negative whole numbers and zero.

Integers and Graphing Integers are all positive and negative whole numbers and zero. Negative numbers are used to represent data less than 0. A negative number is written with a “-” sign.

Integers and Graphing Integers are all positive and negative whole numbers and zero. Negative numbers are used to represent data less than 0. A negative number is written with a “-” sign. Positive numbers are used to represent data greater than 0. If a number does not have a “-” sign, it is assumed to be positive.

Integers and Graphing We can use a number line to display all integers. Integers less than zero Integers greater than zero are negative integers are positive integers

Integers and Graphing A 10 yard loss would be written as what integer?

Integers and Graphing A 10 yard loss would be written as what integer? Because it represents a loss, the integer would be -10.

Integers and Graphing A 10 yard loss would be written as what integer? What would zero represent in this situation?

Integers and Graphing A 10 yard loss would be written as what integer? What would zero represent in this situation? No gain or loss.

Integers and Graphing 4 inches of rain above normal would be written as what integer?

Integers and Graphing 4 inches of rain above normal would be written as what integer? Because it represents above, the integer would be +4, or just 4.

Integers and Graphing 4 inches of rain above normal would be written as what integer? What would zero represent in this situation?

Integers and Graphing 4 inches of rain above normal would be written as what integer? What would zero represent in this situation? Normal

Integers and Graphing A $48 deposit into a saving account would be written as what integer?

Integers and Graphing A $48 deposit into a saving account would be written as what integer? Because it represents an increase, the integer would be +48, or just 48.

Integers and Graphing A $48 deposit into a saving account would be written as what integer? What would zero represent in this situation?

Integers and Graphing A $48 deposit into a saving account would be written as what integer? What would zero represent in this situation? No change in the savings account.

Integers and Graphing Integer and sets of integers can be graphed on a number line.

Integers and Graphing Graph -7 on the number line. To graph an integer on the number line, start at zero.

Integers and Graphing Graph -7 on the number line. To graph an integer on the number line, start at zero.

Integers and Graphing Graph -7 on the number line. Move to the left for a negative integer and right for a positive integer.

Integers and Graphing Graph -7 on the number line. Move to the left for a negative integer and right for a positive integer.

Integers and Graphing Graph 6 on the number line.

Integers and Graphing Graph 6 on the number line. The dot is 6 spaces to the right of zero, or +6.

Integers and Graphing Graph -11 on the number line.

Integers and Graphing Graph -11 on the number line. The dot is 11 spaces to the left of zero, or -11.

Integers and Graphing On a number line, the number to the left is always less than the number to the right.

Integers and Graphing We can also graph sets of numbers. { -4, 2, -1}

Integers and Graphing The temperature outside is 3˚. If the temperature drops 14˚, what will the temperature be?

Integers and Graphing The temperature outside is 3˚. If the temperature drops 14˚, what will the temperature be? -11˚ Start on 3 and move 14 places to the left.

Integers and Graphing A football team receives the ball on their own 5 yard line. a. They make a gain of 15 yards on the first play. What yard line is the ball on?

Integers and Graphing A football team receives the ball on their own 5 yard line. a. They make a gain of 15 yards on the first play. What yard line is the ball on? 20 yard line

Integers and Graphing A football team receives the ball on their own 5 yard line. b. What represents zero in this situation?

Integers and Graphing A football team receives the ball on their own 5 yard line. b. What represents zero in this situation? The 5 yard line, the original placement of the ball.

Integers and Graphing A football team receives the ball on their own The temperature outside is 15°F. If the temperature drops 20°, will the outside temperature be represented by a positive or negative integer? Explain.

Integers and Graphing A football team receives the ball on their own The temperature outside is 15°F. If the temperature drops 20°, will the outside temperature be represented by a positive or negative integer? Explain. Negative
