1 9/1/15– Real Number Addition TEXTBOOK: Chapter 3 -1 , P. 104
DO NOW Try and do this without a calculator 1) = 2). 18 – 11 = 3) = 4). 32 – 17 = 5) = 6) – 31 = HERO PROBLEM (impress me): =

2 What We Are Doing Today OBJECTIVE: WE WILL be able to add positive and negative integers. WHY?: This is a huge foundation skill that we will be using all through our math career. ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: A number line can help us add positive and negative integers. AP

3 What is 10 + -4? Explain your answer.
Thought Question Think for 30 Seconds then Write for 30 Seconds (HINT: the thinking part is more important) What is ? Explain your answer. AP

4 What is a Number Line? A number line is a line with numbers marked on it, stretching to positive and negative infinity. - ZERO is called “The Origin” AP

5 How do you make a Number Line?
How do you draw a number line? 1). Draw a line and mark the origin. 2). Draw the numbers in. You can use any set of numbers as long as they are equally spaced WATCH ME AND COPY IN YOUR NOTES: - a number line demarcated by 1 - a number line demarcated by a number line demarcated by 4 AP

6 Placing numbers on a number line
On the first number line, place (or circle): -4, 6, 1, -3, 5 On the second number line, place (or circle): -1.5, 2.5, 1, the origin On the third number line, place (or circle) -4, 8, 12, 20 AP

7 Using a number line to add real numbers
1). Start at the origin 2). For positive numbers, move right 3). For negative numbers, move left. 4). See where you end up! Examples: 1). What is 4 + 3? 2). What is ? 3). What is ? AP

8 Visual Images of the Process
Think of balloons and weights The balloons are positive numbers which lift the basket up The weights are negative numbers which pull the basket down What happens if there are balloons and no weights? Weights and no balloons? AP

9 Guided Practice 1). 4 + 6 = 2). -4 + -6 = 3). 5 + -7 =
1) = 2) = 3) = 4) = 5) = 6) = AP

10 Independent Practice 7). 3 + 3 = 8). -3 + -3 = 9). -2 + 4 =
7) = 8) = 9) = = 11) = 12) = 13) = 14) = 15) = AP
