Course Goals This course aims at helping students to: 1.Develop cultural awareness and understanding of foreign cultures 2.Develop language skills and cultural competence to successfully communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds 3.Improve oral English proficiency

Cultural exchange based both on video conferencing as well as one-to-one chatting online. SDU students will connect consecutively with a total of two different universities. Each linkage will be with one university at a time and the two universities we will link with this semester include: Course Description

Grading 20% Attendance 40% Class Discussion and Participation 10% Class Presentation 30% Reflective Journals

Attendance Students are expected to attend and ACTIVELY participate in ALL class sessions. Prior notification to the instructor of an intended absence is required. If any student misses portions of more than three classes, the attendance portion of the final grade will be zero.

Class Discussion and Participation All students are expected to ACTIVELY participate in classroom discussions and activities. video conferencing groups: everyone is supposed to contribute to the grand discussion. chatting online groups: focus on the topic and viewing any irrelevant web pages on the computer is not allowed.

Class Presentation In local sessions, students will work to research on the topics of discussion: college life, family and traditions, the meaning of life, and stereotypes and prejudices; and present your findings to class. You will use PPT or any visuals to enhance your oral presentation.

Reflective Journals Every student will submit two reflective journals (two pages, double-space) toward the end of this course. You will reflect on your experience in class and make comparative analysis on different cultures.

Special attention Inappropriate classroom conduct, cheating, and plagiarism are unacceptable and are grounds for a failing grade in this course. If you meet someone who has deep prejudice against or hostility toward China, try to show something positive.
