SCENARIO 3 Wow that’s great! Were you up pretty late working on that? No, Not really. I spent the majority of my time altering a paragraph that I found on the internet that’s kind of about Gardner’s ideas. I just had to make it sound like something I would write. It took a while, but I made it fit perfectly. Hey Jasmine, I finally finished my conclusion paragraph for my essay on Learning Theories! Is Jack violating academic dishonesty, defined by Ashford University’s 2011-2012 Academic Catalog, by alternating work that is not his with the intent of making that work seem like it is his?

WHAT SHOULD THEY DO? Academic Dishonesty Activity Academic Honesty Activity Should Jill support Jack and not let him know that he may be violating academic integrity? Support Jack, but advise him that if he is going to use direct citation/quotations, or paraphrase another source, he needs to appropriately cite the information that he has gathered for his paper

SCENARIO 3: OUTCOME POSITIVE You altered the paragraph to make it your own? That is modification of text. Are you sure you want to do that? How about you use that paragraph as a resource and come up with thoughts of your own? You’re right, Jasmine. Academic Dishonesty is nothing I want to mess with. If I’m going to take the time to write the paper, it should be based on my original thoughts and information of my own. It’s even stronger when I have clear research to support my ideas! Thanks for the guidance Jasmine!

SCENARIO 3: OUTCOME NEGATIVE So Jack how did that paper turn out on Gardeners theory? Uhh! I don’t want to talk about it, the instructor turned me in for plagiarizing and I failed the whole assignment! I wish I just did it on my own, it would have taken the same amount of time and maybe I wouldn’t have failed. Plagiarism Home

SUBMITTING ANOTHER STUDENT’S WORK AS YOUR OWN The use and representation of another student’s work as one’s own, even if the student has the permission of the other student. The use of another’s work constitutes an act of collusion, which constitutes an act of plagiarism.

SCENARIO 1 What happened here? Hey Jasmine, I am taking the same History 101 online class that you took last semester! May I borrow the research paper that you wrote for the class? Sure Jack! Did you want to read it and get some ideas for your research paper? No, my paper is due tomorrow and I have not started working on it yet. I am just going to take your name off the paper and put mine on it so that I can make the deadline.
11
WHAT SHOULD JACK DO? Let Jack use your paper so that he does not have an incomplete for the assignment Tell Jack that you do not feel comfortable sharing your work and/or direct him to his professor for guidance

SCENARIO 1: OUTCOME Hey Jasmine, I am taking the same History 101 online class that you took last semester! May I borrow the research paper that you wrote for the class? Yeah, that sounds like a better idea. I mean, I have an idea of what I want to do, but I just don’t know how to start? I don’t feel comfortable sharing my research paper if you are going to do that. How about I help you develop some ideas for your paper, or even better yet, why don’t you contact your professor and see if she can give you guidance as to how to start your paper? You know what works for me. I sit in front of a computer with no distractions and just start typing. Even if its not starting with the introduction, begin writing the body of the paper. You will be amazed of how much that works! Great! I will try that. Thanks for your help. Wish me luck!

SCENARIO 2: OUTCOME Hello Jack, how did that research paper work for you? Hi Jasmine, not too well. Ashford University instructors have at their disposal a software program called Turnitin that allows them to scan any assignment submitted by a student. This software can determine whether or not content within an assignment is original or if that content came from another source like an internet page or another assignment that was previously submitted to the university… Oh no! I am sorry to hear that Jack. So what does this mean for your research paper? Well Jasmine, this means that WE have some serious questions to answer. Unfortunately that software that I described to revealed that my research paper was not my own original work and that I in fact used your research paper as my own. We both will be contacted by the office of Student Affairs; you as a potential facilitator of plagiarism activities, and me as a potential violator of Ashford University’s Academic code of conduct regarding plagiarism. I am so sorry to involved you in this Jasmine.
