Surveillance Cameras Nowadays surveillance cameras are virtually everywhere and in places such as: Schools Stores Homes Parking Lots Banks And other places with things of great value.

Big Brother/Big Sister Cameras There is a fairly new, high-tech surveillance camera out called the Big Brother or Big Sister Camera. These cameras are mostly used in England and America, but they are popping up all over the nation. As of July 2004, 18 states had Big Brother Cameras installed.

Big Brothers Monitor traffic conditions and protect homeland security Catch drivers who drive too fast and run red lights. Photograph license plates, the driver, passengers, and anything in unoccupied seats.

How They Work The Big Brother Cameras are positioned at the corners of intersections on poles. The cameras point inward so they can photograph cars passing through the intersection.

Price Surveillance cameras can be as cheap as $40.00. However, Big Brother or Big Sister cameras are expensive, costing up to $90,000!

Problems Surveillance and Big Brother Cameras can be helpful, but lots of people consider them to be an invasion of privacy.

Web Cams Lots of websites feature live video feeds. However, most of the websites are adult websites with sexually explicit contents. BEWARE!

Web Cams continued Prices range from $35.99 to $349.99 (at BestBuy.com) Some come with mounts for the wall, desk, or ceiling. Other features include two- way audio and motion detectors.

Workplace Monitoring Of course employers want to be sure that the employees are doing a good job, but employees don’t want every phone conversation, sneeze, or trip to the water cooler logged! Workplace monitoring is something that lots of employers are getting into.

Can My Employer…? Listen to my phone conversations? See what is on my computer screen or stored in my computer’s terminals and hard disk? Tell how long I’ve been on the computer or away from the computer? See what is on my terminal while I’m working?

Can I…? Tell if I am being monitored? Have private emails? Delete messages permanently? There are few laws that deal with or regulate workplace privacy, so BE CAREFUL!
