What to do with this technology? At the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris the main reason for the school's establishment in 1870 was to provide an alternative to the classical orders of the French Beaux-Arts. Teaching vs. Training Students built both cardboard models and 3D renderings; they mixed hand-drawn plans with machine plotted ones 1- the artists clinging to their brushes and pencils 2- the engineers mastering the latest processor capabilities They tended to divide into two categories: when computers shrank in size and software began to produce vector drawings Once the "classical plan" is forgotten, other ways can be found to express the concept. A short animation can show the stacking of a building's stories Media technology

with or without architectural knowledge the professional world asked for well "trained" graduates But we refused to "train" our students, believing that an architect’s craft is design what had been a game for some became a necessity for all We wanted the students to be "immersed" in computing and use it as a natural way of thinking much as drawing has traditionally been The Web Brings It All Together the students using the Web as a simple but effective encyclopedia and communications medium We using the Web to follow the work of our students on exchange at schools all over the planet sometimes a link to a particular site could be more effective than a two-hour lecture. we still felt the "live" studio to be essential for its "face-to-face" instructor feedback, both spoken and drawn n a short "show," text and images can be a welcome redundancy La jardh des possibles - Nantes A student's 3D sketches of mass plans can convey the "spirit" of the design The Merged Web

"seen to much" in French Our electronic studio has a Web site ArchiVue is a library of articles, technical links, and the semester's course Because they have downloaded it themselves but we have found students are much more attentive to text on the Web because can't be bothered by a trip to the library So students who don’t care what grade they receive are more concerned in a showroom in the site Half the world will be able to see their design left his portfolio One of our students visiting a firm in New York had left his portfolio in France. But by linking to our site he could show them his work and was hired What is nice about HTML is that it is a fairly neutral medium and doesn't dictate form or method The simplest way for a student to "go wired" is to scan in hand-made drawings ArchiVue Students can scan their sketching and explain the projects in it

“ Storyboard " The students write or draw an architectural "storyboard." to.. 1- Forcing them to figure out ahead of time what they want to do and why. 2- Encourages quick sketches that can often convey the scheme better than belabored technical drawings Never learn — how to draw Many students today rely so much on computer software presentations that they forget or never learn how to draw we have some pressure-sensitive digital drawing tablets on hand Own style The studio, students tries to maintain the spirit of sketching through the various Web media as the scheme evolves into a more developed design Sustainability is part of every design. Explaining structural theory or the evolution of a design Architects thinking

“ I didn’t think a Mac could read a PC disk " with students discovering computing techniques Flaws in presentation including spelling errors, titles forgotten, or missing, "My hard disk crashed." "My computer has a virus." "It worked on my computer at home.". All about media and file formats. The architectural design is the only part of the experience the instructor wants to be aware of.. The graphic communication problems associated with computing techniques. Their design talent is being recognized more than any "drafting" skills They learn. Architecture, whatever the media and methods used in design, is ultimately expressed in real works, through a built environment for real people student’s sketchbook, allowing for interactive meetings, informing instructors on project progress. Details in 3D are usually better than those copied from technical books
