Common Law n Began in England n Deals with the use of precedent n Covers nearly all aspect of human life n Judge-made law that has developed over centuries n What PRECEDENT did George Washington set?

Criminal Law n Law that defines public wrongs and provides for their punishments n Murder, rape, arson, shoplifting –Derived from the Code of Hammurabi –Used as a deterrent and punishment n Felonies, misdemeanors n What are possible punishments for a criminal case?

Civil Law n Relates to human conduct - lawsuits n Disputes between private parties – Divorces, custody disputes, contracts n Often deal with Money –What are possible punishments for civil cases

Constitutional Law n Based on US and State constitutions n Deals with judicial interpretations of these documents n Ay time a supreme court makes a decision, they establish a constitutional law.
