2 Basic Facts  People who follow Islam are called Muslims.  The Islamic name for God is Allah.  Like Jews and Christians, Muslims are monotheistic.

3 Muhammad The Prophet  He was first a trader in Mecca then became a prophet (messenger of god).  The Muslims thought of him as the last messenger of God.  In the last 22 years of his life, he started receiving the word of god. These words were put in a book called Qur’an.

4 Qur’an  Is the central religious book for all Islam's.  It’s the world finest piece of literature in the Arabic Language.  Muslims finds this as a guideline and moral direction for mankind.

5 Mecca  Is the center of Islamic world and the birthplace of both the Prophet Muhammad and the religion he founded.  According to Arabian Tradition Adam and Eve met at Mt. Arafat, near present day Mecca.

6 Medina  It’s the second holiest city in Islam.  Its an Important city for the presence of Al- Masjid al-Nabawi (The Mosque of the Prophet).  A Mosque is a Muslim house of worship.  The tomb of Muhammad later became part of the mosque.

7 Jihad  Is a religious duty of the Muslims.  There is a lot of controversy to as what it means. It can either mean:  Jihad Against the soul  Jihad against shaytan (Satan)  Jihad against the disbelievers and hypocrites  Jihad against heretics, liars, and evil folk.

8 Hijra?  Is the famous migration Muhammad made from Mecca to Medina in order to escape religious persecution.  Muhammad and his followers made this journey.  It was a major turning point in Islam.

9 5 Pillars of Islam

10 Islamic Women  Islamic women had more rights then other women in that time.  Women were active in religion, trade, and politics.  Still women could not inherit and they had to obey a male figure.

11 Abu Bakr  Abu Bakr was Muhammad's father in law.  Abu Bakr was an early convert to Islam.

12 Shiite and Sunni Muslims  Shiite Muslims believed that Muhammad had designated his son in law Ali to be his successor.  Sunni Muslims believed that the inspiration comes from the example of Muhammad as recorded by his early followers.
