What we will study: ◦ A variety of modern and classic novels and plays ◦ Supplemental texts, approached by theme ◦ Textbooks selections, approached chronologically ◦ Poetry ◦ Short stories ◦ Reading, writing, analysis – prep for upper grade courses and PSAT, SAT, SOL assessments ◦ Research

Emphasis is on skills – critical reading, writing, and analysis What/how/why Silent Sustained Reading SAT/PSAT vocabulary study

Recommended supply list: 3 ring notebook with four dividers (Literature, Vocabulary, Writing, Grammar) Notebook paper (not spiral) Composition or Spiral Notebook (kept in room) Blue or Black pens; #2 pencils and highlighters Note cards Agenda Sticky Notes (optional) Jump/thumb drive to transfer work (optional)

Assessments and Grades will come from: ◦ Writing ◦ Quizzes (regular vocabulary) ◦ Oral presentations ◦ Homework ◦ Projects ◦ Group assignments – class work ◦ participation

Rubrics – always! Essay rubrics primarily based on writing assessment from SOL writing assessment, SAT format but will also include a wide variety of assignments Homework, class work, participation – assessed for progress towards goal- low risk since they are formative assessments

Do your best: ◦ Keep up with reading ◦ Advocate for yourself – ask for help! ◦ Bring supplies ◦ No late homework ◦ Extra points for early papers and projects ◦ School rules apply

Use the restroom between classes! ◦ If you have an EMERGENCY, discreetly ask permission ◦ Sign out and be back in 2-5 minutes Moving around the room: ◦ Remain seated during instruction ◦ You may move during group activities ◦ You may move if you have asked for permission ◦ Get a tissue, sharpen pencils, throw away trash, etc. before class starts or after instruction is finished

Entering the room: ◦ Enter quietly ◦ Take your seat ◦ Check the board for the agenda, the objectives and the bell ringer ◦ Begin bell ringer Leaving the room: ◦ Wait for Mrs. Nielsen’s dismissal ◦ Gather your things and make sure you have all of your items ◦ Leave your desk and area straight and tidy for the next class
