Understanding How A Text’s Structure Contributes To Its Meaning. LAFS.RI.2.5 9/22 AND 9/23/2015
4
What you should be able to do to show mastery of this standard: Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas.
5
Ways you will be asked to demonstrate mastery of this standard: Determine the structure or structural elements of the text. Analyze how structure contributes to the text’s meaning when an inference about the text’s meaning or structure is provided. Analyze how structure contributes to the text’s meaning. An inference about the text’s meaning or structure is provided.
6
Sample Question Stems Part A: How does the author structure the text? Part B: How does the author use this structure to develop ideas? Part A: How does the first author organize information in the text? Part B: What does the final paragraph contribute to the text? Part A: Select the way in which the author uses structure to develop ideas. Part B: Select a sentence from the article that signals or exemplifies the text’s structure.
7
What this means for you: You have to be able to quickly recognize how a text is structured. You have to set a purpose for reading once you recognize the structure. You must be able to cite evidence that identifies this structure. You must be able to show how this structure contributes to the overall meaning of the text. You must recognize structure in parts of a text then evaluate how it contributes to the entire text.
8
Brainstorm: List 5 different types of text structures. What are three signal words for each?
9
Types of Text Structures Cause and effect, proposition and support, compare and contrast, chronological order, problem and solution Review what you would expect to learn from an article with each structure.
10
Moving On… Now that we understand what we need to know, let’s put it into practice.
11
“We Do” Create a 3 column chart labeled individual, ideas, and events. Turn to page 802 in your literature book. We will now read about the 4 Malcolms. Types of Text Structure: Cause and effect proposition and support compare and contrast chronological order problem and solution
12
Modeling I will model this process as we read about the 1 st Malcolm together. Write 1 st Malcolm in the individuals column. Let’s read. Now let’s chart the ideas of the 1 st Malcolm.
13
1 st Malcolm’s Ideas Ideas:
14
1 st Malcolm’s Events Events
15
Now let’s view the 2 nd Malcolm Add his name to the individual column. Let’s think about his ideas and chart them. What events took place during this time?
16
You Do Complete this process for the 3 rd and 4 th Malcolm Next, respond to the following: Be prepared to share out. 1.What is the structure of “Malcolm X” and how is it used to develop ideas over the course of the text? 2.What sentences from the text signal or exemplify the text’s structure?
17
Read Chapter 7 in your literature groups. Choose a different role for this reading. Remember, as you read, think about the essential question and start to think about how individuals, their ideas, and events interact to drive the plot of the story.
