LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 LAV construction status: a snapshot 2 A1 Arrived at CERN 29 Jun Ready for installation! (if no damage) A2 Damage repaired and detector recabled Will ship today/arrive at CERN tomorrow (13 Jul) Ready for installation! A3 3 blocks to be replaced Complete inspection and test to be performed Tentatively scheduled for week of 15 Aug A4 Arrived at CERN 13 Apr Ready for installation! A5 Arrived at CERN 24 May Ready for installation! A6 Vessel will arrive at Frascati Monday 18 Jul 96 blocks & 8 bananas ready Expect to mount at least 1 layer before Aug

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Notes on Frascati-CERN transport 3 DescriptionDatesShipperEquipment A5 → CERN24-25 MayRomaSped13.5m semitrailer A2 → Frascati26-27 MayFazi & Fazi8.5m truck A1 → CERN28-29 JunScauri13.5m semitrailer A2 → CERN12-13 Jul?? Summary of recent transports All shipments up to and including A5 done by RomaSped New shippers for A2 roundtrip/A1 return to CERN Transports comissioned at CERN By using different shipping companies we learn that conditions of transport strongly depend on driving style and equipment used Detailed comparison of A5 and A2 transports recently written up See EDMS #1149488

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Comparison: Truckbed acceleration 4 −Vertical −Transverse −Longitudinal Best result is A2 to Frascati Type of truck used Differences between A5 and A1 attributed to RomaSped driving style

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Comparison: LAV acceleration 5 −Vertical −Transverse −Longitudinal Results acceptable in all 3 transports Results similar for A5 and A2 Very different results on truckbed Situation unusually calm for A1 Trying to understand…

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Comparison: Temperature 6 New thermal insulation works well Max temp excursion 3 ∘ C F. Rafaelli, memo to be put on EDMS Important to delay summer departures till late in day A1 departure at 15:40 – too early?

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Problems with signal flanges 7 Signal flange with 10 37-pin Sub D connectors Manufactured by Allectra (Germany) Distributed in Italy by EcoVide One flange on A1 failed helium leak test in our lab! 10-6 mbar l/s instead of 10-10 mbar l/s Problem traced to one connector Flange returned to EcoVide for inspection Confirmed flawed weld on problematic connector EcoVide performed leak tests on 7 unused flanges at Frascati – 2 failures! Problem potentially traced to work by new, less experienced welder No satisfactory explanation of why flanges had defects at delivery Need to return all flanges welded by new welder for inspection & repair Total flanges mounted A1-A5 = 10 Flanges on A2 and A3 welded by original welder (4) Need to dismount and return to Allectra 6 flanges from A4, A5, A1

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Scheduling of A3 repair 8 Write up of results of load tests on lead-glass blocks EDMS #1149467 (20 Jun) 3 blocks still to be replaced in A3 Block test results suggest use of simple setup with full access to cable grille WPA complete by end of next week Tentatively scheduled for week of 15-20 Aug – to be confirmed ASAP Complication: New travel reimbursement rules from Italian government Difficult to plan travel to CERN without personal expense

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Preparations for A6: Assembly stand 9 Outer diameter increases from 217 cm (A1-A5) to 267 cm (A6-A9) Modifications to assembly stand: Wider block spacing, new support rings (larger radius) Other components can be modified Organization of laboratory space a concern A9-A11 outer diameter increases to 307 cm! ∅ 267 cm

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Preparations for A6: Rotation stand 10 Rotation stand needs to be modified New cross braces and rotation bars have been constructed (Fantini) A6 and related material to be delivered Monday 18 Jul Fantini personnel will be present for inspection and commissioning

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 A7 and beyond 11 Status of A7: Basic construction finished: calendering, seam welding, flanges Residual magnetic field measurements performed Ready for internal lathing Preliminary vacuum tests week of 25 Jul Status of A8: Basic construction partially finished: calendering, seam welding Work on flanges ongoing Status of A11: Preparation of sheet steel in progress: cutting, beveling

LAV construction status – M. Moulson (Frascati) – Photon Veto WG – CERN – 12 Jul 2011 Conclusions and outlook 12 4 stations ready for installation (A1, A2, A4, A5) Repair work on A3 complete by end of summer First layer installed in A6 before August holidays On track for delivery of A6 and A7 by end of year
