The Taboos For Taiwanese GROUP: 2 LEADER:90333 GROUP MEMBERS:80614 70231 70432 71028
2
Get Married Sometimes in funerals, weddings, or religious ceremonies, Taiwanese will occupy a whole street without warning. Even though they're blocking your way, it's not good to walk through such a gathering.
3
NUMBERS The number "4" sounds the same as "death" in Chinese. In some hospitals, you won't find the button for "4" in the elevators. The number "8" is considered lucky as it sounds similar to "prosper" in Chinese.
4
GIFTS Umbrellas are not good gifts for lovers. In Chinese "umbrellas" sound similar to "separation", which means "breaking up". Don't present someone a clock as a gift. The phrase "to give a clock" sounds just like "to attend a funeral" - it's very inauspicious, but giving a watch is okay.
5
Chinese New Year You say something implies it will happen even if you mean no offense. For instance, if you say “watch out for the knife or you will hurt yourself”. Such statements should be avoided especially during the Lunar New Year.
6
Body Language If you want someone to come to you, don't wave them over with an upturned finger. This is impolite.
7
Ghost Month The period between July 1st and July 15th in the Lunar Calendar is considered the "Ghost Month”. A lot of things should be avoided unless necessary, like marriage, moving, traveling or no emergent medical operations.
8
COIORS The color "white" is related to death. It is O.K. to dress in white for ordinary lives, going to work or school, but it is not good for a joyful occasion like a wedding banquet as a guest. Don’t use red ink to write letters or notes. A significant amount of writing in red should be avoided. That represents a curse.
9
Tricks When using a toothpick in public, cover your mouth with your hand. If someone gives you a present, it's best not to open it in front of them. After eating a meal, never leave your chopsticks sticking up in the left-over rice at the bottom of your bowl.
10
The end. Thank you for attention.
