2 The Relationship Between data information + knowledge
The relationship between data, information + knowledge can be shown through an example. An example of data is random numeric data e.g This data can then be made into information by giving it structure, context and meaning. E.g. If we know the data represents temperature then we are adding context to the data which makes it information. This links the data to information. Knowledge is then applying rules to the information or applying the information to a situation. E.g. If we know that the temperatures are the temperatures for London we can then use our own knowledge to get an average temperature.

Data: Raw facts and figures that has no meaning until given [context] or [structure] or meaning Information: Data which has been given – [structure] or [context] or meaning Knowledge: Applying rules to the information/ the application of information to a situation

4 Examples Data: or OD67SK Information: 10/05/1995 could be a date, OD6 7SK could be a postcode Knowledge: 10/05/1995 could be the birth date of a student in a school, OD6 7SK could be a postcode in a register from a estate agency.

Information: A phone number, initials, code Knowledge: The phone number of person in a directory, initials of people in a bank log, a code for the army to use
